My son was prescribed melatonin by camhs as otherwise he is awake til gone 1am n back awake at 6am latest....with melatonin he is asleep by 10.30pm n wakes round the 7.30am mark. Son age 9 has borderline ADHD...awaiting diagnosis for Aspergers or High Functioning Autism, also has bilateral grommets, Sensory Avoidance Disorder and Hypermobility and reduced shoulder girdle.

How does the melatonin affect him throughout the day any side effects? How long are you able to use for?

He takes it at 8pm and it takes round an hour to kick in so 9pm then he goes up n does the bedroom routine...only thing i've seen is he gets grouchy about half hour after taking it but that might be cos he 'feels' tired if that makes sense.....he wakes naturally any time between 7am and 8am....when he is off it he is awake till 1am n back awake any time from 6am......and there's no affects at all thru the day. My son is on it 3 weeks then a week off then on 3 weeks then off a week...but I know other kids who are on it 5 nights then 2 off so think it varies. I'm one of those people who when it comes to medication needs all the pros and cons before i'l remotely consider giving it to my lad but got to say this one works and other than the odd cranky mood after taking it there's no side affects. Son age 9 has borderline ADHD...awaiting diagnosis for Aspergers or High Functioning Autism, also has bilateral grommets, Sensory Avoidance Disorder and Hypermobility and reduced shoulder girdle.

Depending were you are some docs are reluctant to prescribe it for some reason...a lot of people end up having to go to the pead or camhs so if no joy might be worth trying one of them. Not getting alot of sleep is tough. My son only seems to need a few hours I think your body adapts. Cat naps are boosters which help me get through the week.I dint find Melatonoin useful it worked for a little while then no effect.
