The Perfect Suit
|
I recently read an article in one of the free evening newspapers written by a reader, it was about the habit of men wearing suits. The writer was ranting about how London suits are turning the modern day man into their Grandpas before their time. She goes on to talk about how inappropriate the suit has become not only for the work place but also in interviews.
After reading this I took a look around the LBC studios and noticed that there was not one man wearing what I would call a traditional suit. Of course all the gentlemen were smart in pressed shirts and shoes, but had the suit become 'uncool' without as much of a flinch from British society?
There is something special that a suit gives the wearer to certain occasions. Rather than a uniform of the office, it should be regarded as a statement of ones character and intent. Wearing a suit to an interview and even to a social occasion, shows you care enough consider your appearance. I'm not suggesting that every man should be running to Saville Row for a tailored creation, merely that a suit is still an essential part of your everyday wardrobe. Shopping for the perfect 'off the peg' suit is easy if you know where to look, and we have done all the hard work for you. Here is a selection of the finest suit shops, that won't break the bank in London.
In Soho there is a lovely little independent shop called Closet Case which stocks a limited selection of designer suits and shirts. Prices aren't cheap but are competitive which means you will always walk out a happy customer. Leonard from Daybrook says, 'They stock a limited supply of sizes, so if your looking for something you don't want half of London to have, this is the place to go to.'
If you're not a suit snob and just want something that fits right and looks good then you can't go wrong with Moss. The Farringdon shop is in a popular office district and the competition in the area ensures that the service you get is fantastic. LBC listener Nick said, 'Chap there was very helpful - found me exactly what I wanted and some decent cufflinks to match. And it was decent value too. I still want to chop the label out, though.'
In London we are spoilt for choice when it comes to great men’s designers but our personal favourite is Paul Smith. The cut of the suits is fantastic and you can really feel the value in the clothing. Max from Canonbury says, 'I got a suit here last year, and it has served me so well that I've struggled to justify buying another one to replace it.'
Another independent shop that sells high quality suits and shirts at reasonable prices is Volpe. Hidden down the side streets of Pimlico, this gem of a store has a well sustained collection of tailoring to suit most men. Stephen from Tufnell Park agrees and comments, 'Its always my first stop when I fancy a new suit or shirt. Excellent range of Italian menswear and they cant' be beat for quality and price. A real joy to shop here.'
And for the High Street...
There is a selection of high street chains that sell excellent suits, not always of the highest quality but up to the minute style and smart cuts. We have whittled these down to the top five.
Zara - The Spanish group brings European style to London's fashionistas on a budget. TopMan - Philip Green's selection of everyday suits catches the eye and pleases the wallet. Stick to the darker fabrics to ensure they look smart. River Island - Not just for the teeny-boppers, the cutting trends ensure you will pick up an 'of the moment' suit. We recommend staying away from the fitted jackets if you’re tall as they come up a little short. Marks and Spencer’s - Not just for our wives and mothers, there is a smart and modern selection of office wear as well as black tie suits at affordable prices. Next - The kings of the high street when it comes to mass production of quality garments. Great value for what you get.
