Divorce lawyers are seeing a rise in cases of social networking sites and websites in general being cited in marriage breakdown proceedings.
Web 2.0 has made it even easier to meet people online and many people feel relaxed and talk more openly over the net as they feel safer than meeting people face to face. Obviously there is always that doubt in your mind, as to how genuine people are, but with the likes of facebook, twitter and myspace many people see it as simply making new friends.
Typical scenarios include: people who feel isolated and alone find themselves talking to people online or those who come home after work and spend a few hours surfing the internet often engage in conversation.
With everyone communicating via the web it makes it extremely difficult to avoid these situations and not engage with people. Many don't class the fact of talking and flirting to members of the opposite sex as cheating, but it can often have a detrimental effect on your relationships at home.
Family members often notice that you are spending more time on the computer and less time interacting with them which can lead to rifts and arguments.
Many lawyers are now seeing divorce cases that cite "Digital information eg texting, emailing and having conversations on facebook" as the first indication that something was wrong.
Although it is still not possible to petition for divorce based on cyber adultery unless intimate relations have taken place in the real world, but it may be deemed as unreasonable behavior.
