THE hard work and determination of students with autism and Asperger's syndrome was recognised at a special awards ceremony last week.
Pupils at West London Community College, in Longbridge Way, Uxbridge, were rewarded for their achievements and progress in their chosen subjects, from first aid and life skills to assertiveness and emotional literacy.
Students also received special awards after a vote by peers and staff.
Caroline Martin won the business person of the year award for her outstanding commitment to the college tuck shop, while Gary Macey was recognised for being supportive when others feel unhappy.
Damien Bardou was named as the student who made the most progress, after becoming more attentive and focused during sessions.
Certificates were presented to the students by Uxbridge MP John Randall, who said: "The students are a really good bunch of people and really independent.
"They have proved that, despite the problems they may face, they are capable of achieving good things, and it shows what a fantastic job the staff are doing."
