Natalie Sherriff’s “Danimation Experience”
With Dani Bowman our Charity Overseas Ambassador
Dani Bowman, creator of Dani-Motion (https://danibowman.com/) talks to Natalie Sherriff about her experience at Dani Academy Summer Camp:
I was invited by Anna Kennedy and Danimation to gain a lifetime experience with other autistic people and learn how to produce cartoons and learn more about voiceover acting. A day before the course started Dani and Sandi (hosts of the course) scheduled a call to meet me & my parents, and to introduce me to the course, they were very nice and explained what we were going to do in the course.
Day 1: Introduction to Flipaclip & ToonBoom/harmony 20 essentials:
What you first did (we met each other and went off into other groups. In my group, we did the introduction to “flipaclip” where we all made a bouncing fox animation.
This was an exciting part of the course as I was able to use a brand-new app that I haven’t used before, however I was familiar with certain tools within the app from other apps I use on my phone to animate.
After this, we all got together, and we presented what we had made to one another and had a discussion on how and what we had all done.
Day 2: Brainstorming session
In the brainstorming session, we confirmed the roles for a group project. One person did the dialogue and the script. Five different people did the designing; props, characters, and backgrounds; some people did voice over work; someone did edit, and I did the post credit and end credit sequence.
We went into a Zoom room with Dani and she showed me how to design something on “ToonBoom” and was able to finish and create it from there. I found it easy and enjoyable as Dani explained everything very clearly.
Day 3: Finishing the group Project
In day three, we were finishing our group project on harmony (ToonBoom) and started our own personal project.
We created a story board on day one of an idea we had. I did it on flipaclip as ToonBoom can be more difficult to control when using a mouse to draw. Ir would have been difficult to learn ToonBoom in one go whilst producing the personal project.
Day 4: Finishing my personal project
I finished my personal project and met with Debi Derryberry (voice of Jimmy Neutron and Draculaura from Monster High and more) and Sam Kwasman (voice of Donald Duck and Little Quacker from Tom and Jerry).
Both actors demonstrated techniques and tips for us to use when we do voice overs. I was asked to read a script for Debi and try an evil villain persona. I was nervous however Debi made me feel at ease as she spoke through and mentored me through it.
Day 5: The Presentation
We all did the finishing touches on the personal project whilst Dani compiled all the work together to present as one video.
Then all parents/carers joined the Zoom call as Dani and Sandy presented our work. We all watched a video on the life of Dani and how being autistic set certain challenges for her, however in the end is doing something she loves to do and inspires others to do the same.
Pre-recordings of the class was compiled and shown so everyone could see how much work went into what we produced. We were then presented with our certificates, and it ended.
The Danimation was an incredible and invaluable experience.
Thank you to Anna Kennedy and Danimation team for allowing this to happen.
