Sensational Story Massage for Autism, Aspergers, ADHD, PDA and Sensory Processing
An article by our Well-being Ambassador Giuliana Wheater and her video!
Touch is incredibly bonding, releasing and stimulating all our happy hormones and coping chemicals: Oxytocin, serotonin, dopamine, endorphins and even melatonin which regulates sleep, mood, and aggression. Our emotional intelligence and immunity are also hugely boosted.
But what if you have a child who simply will not let you massage them, is touch averse or does not want to sit still or lie down for very long?
Engage their passions!! (I hate the word “fixations” and all its negative connotations). Adapt touch around those passions, make up stories or even songs based around these. You could even turn the powerful bit gentle touch of story massage into how their day has been, friendship issues and how to cope, a piece of homework, what to do when they feel overwhelmed, or a favourite character from a book, film, or TV show.
Problems can be worked through this way, laughter and perspective come into play as well as empowerment and tools to use in certain situations. Put the massage into games too – and join in! Make a “metaphor massage – all about me “box where you deserve yourselves and each other. Invent your own gentle massage strokes and invite the kids to do the same. It is not only incredibly bonding but empowering too.
Have fun, see you next week! Giuliana Wheater
